The introduction of democracies in most African countries came with a great sigh of hope and relief to many Africans who had suffered repression under dictatorship regimes.
Africa felt a cool breeze of a new era.
An era that promised greater freedom and national prosperity, but decades later, there is a sense in which I feel democracy was a curse to the African continent.
Africa was promised a free world after the fall of many autocratic leaders but she failed to see the recent woes coming.
She expected to elect leaders who would help improve her standards of living but she never realized that this change would use local people to vote into power leaders who would advance looting of public funds other than the greater good.
Born into a democracy, I myself have witnessed them living among us.
They were here…
… knowing our misery and our daily needs.
They know 100% that the average African swims in absolute poverty living on scraps day in day out.
Then they tell us to put them into power promising us gold and diamonds and just as a young lady who is in love, we fall for them, giving them all our trust.
As in a nightmare they get us yoked to a cart and they become masters of our fate.
It’s largely undebatable that most people in Africa only want power for person gains….
A statement i am confidently making from observation on people currently in power and from the shocking answers i got when i asked ny friends why they would want to join politics.
Once they are in power they start to think it’s time to establish an economic base for their descendants.
Our costs of living get higher just as luxuries become unaffordable too.
Only a minority enjoys numerous privileges while the bulk of the population pays at a greater price to sustain their economic empire ambitions.
It’s very sorry that common people wake tirelessly only to be rewarded with hate amd selfishness.
The average income for an average voter is very little and insufficient compared to the spiked prices of basic goods on which he or she is supposed to spend on.
While the birth of democracy in Africa was supposed to be the birth of a greater African dream, we are yet to overcome the wicked power of a nightmare that has overshadowed our future.
There is a great feeling of hurt and and general dissatisfaction in the heart of mother Africa. Many children are still not accessing education due to poverty.
Modern feminism has gone beyond Mary Wallstonecraft’s renaissance belief of equal education opportunities for both boys and girls. Today it’s pityful to see girls being favored more than boys to bring forth gender equality. What future are we creating for the boy child whom we are sidelining.
As this was not enough, Africa feels like enchanted as you can’t just start imagining the levels of rape and defilement of young girls. The notion of greater freedom appears to have driven some citizens nuts as no strong legislation appears to deter them.
Democracy has brought untold financial slavery for common people in most African states, a tale mother Africa never precedented.
The African dreams of a better life. The African wishes for a peaceful life with no conflicts, no famine and a fair education system among others. While the African struggles, it now appears normal to see leaders using the taxpayer’s money to build multimillion Dollar mansions.
While the girl child is crying, leaders are busy creating a personality cult of their own.
Fortunately, the wise have always christened us to be hopeful.
There is a philosophy that says we can fight discontent with hope but there is a sense in which our very own hope keeps on failing us.
We must hope that a messiah will be born among us who will lead us out of this bondage.
We must hope that millions of unemployed youths will find solace in the near future as our population will be business minded and not be dettered by government policy.
We will live to see our economy grow from a pityful economy to an industrial super power.
What a pity is it that after more than five decades of independence, pre-independence cries are still being heard today?
The drive to our fight for democracy still remains at large and we are not a proud people.
It’s high time you woke up from this paralysing nightmare my Africa. You better wake up lest you die from the agonizing pain of your childishness.
You must wake up and deal with the corruption that overshadows the magnificent African Dream.
